MTN Successfully Tests 3G Network Shutdown in Cape Town

MTN has successfully tested shutting down its 3G network in several Cape Town neighborhoods. The test, which began in early 2024, aimed to migrate subscribers to more advanced 4G and 5G technologies.

Phased Approach for Migration

MTN informed affected customers about the pilot project in January 2024. The company will follow a phased approach for the migration, with a full transition planned for completion by December 31, 2025.

Assessing 2G Network Migration

Parallel to the 3G migration, MTN is assessing viable dates to migrate users on the 2G network. Engagements to migrate the 2G network services will be communicated in due course.

Government’s Role in Legacy Network Switch-Off

The South African government has suspended deadlines for migrating from 2G and 3G networks, opting for industry consultations instead. The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) is conducting an economic impact assessment to minimize the impact of the switch-off.

Challenges and Concerns

One major obstacle to switching off 2G and 3G in South Africa is the relatively high prices of 4G and 5G devices. While MTN and Vodacom have launched affordable devices, they prefer that the government not set arbitrary deadlines for a legacy network switch-off.
